Whether you're applying for a jobpitching your business, orcommunicating with coworkers, the subject line of your email is one of thebest tools you have for grabbing the reader's attention and getting a response.
It's also one of the most misunderstood. Being too wordy, vague, or eager in the subject line is a great way to get your email deleted rather than read.
We asked career and email experts what not to do in your email subject line. Here are the most common mistakes:

1. Not writing one

Not including a subject line is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. Amanda Augustine, career expert at professional job-matching serviceTheLadders, stresses that the subject line can be the most important part of the email, since it often determines whether an email is opened and how the recipient responds. An email with a blank subject line will likely get deleted, lost, or immediately irritate the recipient, who is forced to open the email to figure out what it's about.

2. Writing too much

A typical desktop inbox reveals about 60 characters of an email's subject line, while a mobile phone shows just 25 to 30 characters, says Augustine. What's more, 50% of emails are now read on mobile phones, according to Dmitri Leonov, a VP at email management service SaneBox. If you write more than six to eight words and don't put the most important words at the beginning, you could lose the recipient right from the start.

3. Being too vague

The subject line should communicate exactly what the email is about so that the recipient can prioritize the email's importance without having to open it. For example, writing "Do you have a sec?" is too vague, says Augustine, since the reader will have to open the email or reply to figure out what you want. Don't make the reader guess. Keep it specific, straightforward, and use logical keywords that will make it searchable later.

4. Using filler words

Since you only have so much space to work with, don't waste it with unnecessary words like "hello," "nice to meet you," and "thanks," which can easily be included in the email's body. For instance, if you're applying for a job:
Don't write: Hello! May I ask about a job opening?
Do write: Referred by Jane Brown for Technical Writer position

5. Putting words in ALL CAPS

Using all caps may get someone's attention, but in the wrong way. It's the digital equivalent of yelling, and your job is to make the email as easy as possible for the recipient to read rather than giving them anxiety, says Leonov. Instead, use dashes or colons to separate thoughts, and avoid special characters like exclamation points.

6. Starting a sentence that finishes in the email

If you begin a thought or question that ends in the email body, then the reader is forced to open the email. It's annoying, and since clarity and being respectful of the recipient's time is the goal, it's not very helpful, says Augustine. Consider whether instant message, a call, or an in-person chat might be a better medium for your question.

7. Using the wrong name

Augustine says copy-and-paste errors are all too common. Sometimes when people are sending a similar email to multiple people, they forget to tailor it to each reader and end up with the wrong name or title in the subject line. The easiest way to avoid this is to reread the subject line before you hit send.

8. Not indicating the urgency

"People want to know whether they really need to read this now and if they have to respond," says Augustine. If you need a response, make it clear in the subject line and set a deadline. For instance, you could say: "Please reply by Friday." If not, tack on "no response needed" or "FYI" to the end.

9. Not including who referred you

If you've been referred by a mutual acquaintance, do not save that for the body of the email, says Augustine, since you risk it getting trashed before the recipient opens it. To grab the reader's attention, she suggests beginning the subject line with the full name of the person who referred you.

10 admin tasks to knock out by the end of the year

As the final days of 2014 fly by, make sure you've tended to any lingering IT chores so you can start the New Year off right.

The year is winding down. Next thing you know, 2015 will be here and you'll be wondering what happened to good ol' 2014. Hopefully, you'll get everything completed and in good shape to ensure your IT department continues working like a well-oiled machine as you head into the New Year.
But which year-end admin tasks should take priority? I compiled a list of 10 things you can slap on as a recurring calendar event to help ensure that they are completed at year's end. Will they all apply to every admin out there? Probably not. But you can be sure that a few of these tasks will be necessary on your network, systems, or department.

1: Updates

I'm always shocked at how many administrators go without updating systems. Don't get me wrong. I fully understand where this is coming from. But those updates often bring crucial security patches, bug fixes, and necessary feature additions. Unfortunately, updates have been known to break systems -- and that's the last thing you want to have to deal with heading into a new year. So before the clock strikes midnight on December 31, be sure you have all updates done and working on all servers and desktops.

2: Malware/antivirus

Make sure all machines have the necessary malware/antivirus software. There is no better time than the end of the year to do this. No matter how diligent you are, some desktops will slip under the security radar. Though you may be knee-deep in hardening your servers, you must not allow those machines touched by end users to go ignored. Ensure that every desktop and laptop machine has both anti-malware and antivirus software installed and up to date ─ otherwise, all that work you've done on your servers could easily be compromised. This might also be a great time to switch over to a managed system (one you can control from a centralized location).

3: User loose ends

End users come and end users go. During the hectic daily grind, there are times when users are released from duty, and their profiles, logins, and data remain. Although the data might be a "must keep" piece to the puzzle, it's doubtful that profiles and logins need be saved. So go through your user list and clean house. Remove those users who are no longer with the company. If there's data that must be saved, move it to a centralized repository that can be accessed by those who need it.

4: Active directory degunking

When Active Directory works, it's a thing of beauty. When it fails, it's a nightmare. Although a rogue AD profile will not likely take down the ship, there's no reason to chance that nightmare. It's the end of the year and you should take the time to back up the AD server and clean up the Active Directory database. The article is a few years old, but the information is still relevant.

5: QuickBooks data files

Like Active Directory, QuickBooks can be either a boon or a bust. When the data file is clean, QuickBooks works like a champ. When the data file is dirty, the software can start to drag and even bring the whole QuickBooks system down. With that in mind, the end of the year is a perfect time to clean up that QuickBooks database. There is a built-in tool for this that will walk you through the process of backing up the database and then cleaning it. I always recommend doing this quarterly -- but if you can manage it only annually, check to make sure it's been done by the end of the year.

6: External hard drive status checks

Hardware fails. Period. End of story. All those external drives you have backing up your servers, data, and other information... they will fail. It is always best to be ahead of that game rather than trying to play catch up. (The game of "catch up" can be costly.) Nearly every external drive has a tool you can download to check the health of the hardware. Do not depend on the Windows tools to test these external drives. Go to the manufacturer's website and download a drive-specific tool for your testing purposes. You may find a dying drive in time to extract the data and replace the hardware without loss.

7: Bare metal backups

If you aren't already doing this, get a backup of every server so you can dump that backup onto a new piece of hardware and get up and running in hours. This should already be on your radar (or even better, already implemented). If it's not, now is the time to do so. You should at least have a monthly bare metal backup created and stored offsite. Year-end is a great time to inventory those offsite backups and make sure each one is viable and ready to go.

8: Documentation

This is one of the first tasks to get thrown out the window. Let me put it as succinctly as possible: If you have solid documentation for your servers, systems, and procedures, your department will run infinitely smoother. Without documentation, you will have an administrator quit and disappear with all the information necessary to properly manage one of those servers or clients. Don't let this happen. Take the time at the end of the year to update all documentation and even put into place the process by which you will keep documentation up to date on a daily or weekly basis.

9: Software disks and manuals

How many times have you needed an older piece of software or wanted to reinstall something recently purchased... but you couldn't find the install disks and licenses? The end of year is a good time to track down all that software and store it in your office. To this I can add ...

10: Total cleanup!

Through the year, your office, the server room, storage locations, break rooms... everything can fall into disarray. Now that the clock is winding down on 2014, take a day or a week (however long is necessary), to spit-shine every inch of the department. All that dust and dirt gets sucked up into servers ─ and we know what that leads to. Beyond the obvious, a neat and tidy department leads to more efficient work. All of a sudden, you know where everything is and nothing is buried under a pile of cat5 cables or old pizza boxes. A clean IT department is an efficient one.

The Best Programming Languages Every Beginner Should Learn

Computer science is a booming industry in the US - and it pays extremely well. There's always demand for sharp, talented engineers, which is why learning how to code can seem like an attractive option.
But, as is the case with any new skill, it can be difficult to know where to start. Here are a few steps you should take early on and programming languages that are best-suited for beginners.

Before you learn a language, start with 'drag and drop' programming.

"Drag and drop" programming is a basic technique that allows you to build code by dragging and dropping blocks or some other visual cue rather than manually writing text-based code.
It makes it easy to understand the basics of programming without getting caught up in meticulous character placement, according to Hadi Partovi, co-founder of a website that offers online coding courses called Code.org.
"Once you've learned the basic concepts using drag and drop, you'll immediately want to learn [how to] do the real thing," Partovi said to Business Insider.
There are plenty of programs out there that can help you get started with drag and drop programming, including MIT Scratch and Code.org's Code Studio, and Google Blocky.

Python is one of the easiest languages to start with.

Python is an easy language for beginners, according to Partovi, because there's less of an emphasis on syntax. So, if you forget your parentheses or misplace a few semicolons, it shouldn't trip you up as much as it might if you were coding in a different language.

But Javascript is one of the most useful languages to know as a developer.

Javascript isn't as easy as Python, but it runs on every single platform out there - Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android among others. Every single Web browser, and even new types of devices like smartwatches use Javascript at some capacity, Partovi said.
"Once you reach that level of critical mass, it's not going away," Partovi said.

Once you have the hang of Javascript, try playing with Ruby and Ruby on Rails.

Ruby on Rails is a great tool that can help you with the backend aspect of your programming. Although Ruby and Ruby on Rails have similar names, there's actually an important difference. Ruby is a scripting language, just like Python, but Ruby on Rails is a Web app framework built on Ruby. In other words, Ruby is the language, while Ruby on Rails is a tool that makes it easy to use the Ruby language to build websites.
What makes Ruby and Ruby on Rails so attractive, according to Partovi, is that there's very little prototyping involved. This means that once you have the code written, it's pretty easy to get the final product up and running.

BONUS: Get familiar with HTML...you're going to need it if you want to build a website.

While HTML isn't a programming language in the sense that Python, Ruby, and Javascript are, you still need it to build a website. HTML is used to describe how your website looks, while other languages like Javascript power the interactive components, such as what happens when you clock a button on the site.
